And it wasn't because of some comedy show! Yes, it is possible for your body and your face to hurt from too much happiness. Trust me. I know this. I hope this encourages you to make it a point to head out to LinuxFest Northwest next year!
I'm writing this blog post at SEATAC while I wait for my flight to Denver after the best LinuxFest I've ever been to. LinuxFest Northwest in Bellingham, Washington celebrated its 20th year in 2019, making for an epic reason to celebrate. The highlight of the conference was the annual System76/Jupiter Broadcasting BBQ in the parking lot. It's amazing to think there were only a dozen or two of us enjoying some post LFNW BBQ a few years ago, and now it's grown into hundreds!

System76 graciously covered the cost of the BBQ, Jupiter Broadcasting and Linux Academy covered the bulk of the labor and promotion behind the BBQ, and there were a handful of amazing volunteers that kept the food stocked and moving! Special thanks are due for Angela Fisher, Adam @chzbacon "Mr. Bacon," Michael, Brandon "The Bruce", and Chris and Noah for entertaining so many of us! Jeff with the VR drone, Michael saving the day with the soda and Hadea with the epic hospitality... what a community!
I'm so glad I had my entire team and Alex, our copywriter with me this year. I think the amount of fun you have at a conference is generally defined by the attitude of the people you attend it with. My team was amazing and funny the entire time. Levi even mentioned that he nearly suffocated from laughter and everyone else in earshot bragged about faces or sides hurting. I call that success. I hope my bros had fun at the booth. I've been at conferences with them, but it was my first time taking all of them with me as System76 employees. They did great. I love the Happiness Team at System76. I'm going to frame this photo!
Sunday wrapped up with the final hours at the booth and a quick presentation called 'sudo apt install happiness.' I received great feedback so I can make the content better for my next conference. I appreciate your support and interest in my happiness endeavors. We closed the day with some grub and brews at Chuckanut Brewery right by the water. I recommend that brewery if you're looking for a beer and a hearty meal. Nothing beats some good Schnitzel! Nate scored a group photo!
Planning for next year will be here before we know it. Keep this conference in mind for next year. If you can only go to one event per year, make it LinuxFest Northwest!
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Oh no, you got stuck? Linux drama got you down? You actually don't know everything? What if you have to pick up the phone and call tech support and someone like me answers? A WOMAN.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Let me enlighten you on some proper etiquette for speaking with a female tech support rep.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">My open source career began working customer service for Ubuntu/Linux users in early 2012. Like many open source enthusiasts, I was immediately drawn to the community. Over the years, the community has been welcoming, friendly and helpful for the most part. Eventually, I transitioned into a technical support role, and I started to experience unnecessary negativity as a woman and I believe I'm not alone.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">During my very technical, non-exotic dancer workday, I do not expect to deal with disgusting pick-up lines and filthy language. I can't stand when people use sexually suggestive statements in a support interaction. As a baseline, most women prefer if you didn't hit on us at all during a support call or in a support ticket.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Sometimes people confuse friendly banter in between Linux commands as a flirtatious invitation to get personal. But in reality, it is just banter and we have customers to help. When you ask personal questions or make suggestive comments, it takes time away from other customers during business hours. I could be replacing your personal questions with diagnostic questions for another customer. Instead, I just get a little angry, sometimes unproductive for a few minutes while I vent, and then confused about why this behavior is still happening in 2019. It can derail a day if you're not used to it.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">When men use words like 'hot or sexy' when speaking to a female representative, it's destructive. If for some reason you feel a comment about the picture is necessary- snap out of it. It isn't. Anything beyond a nice picture comment is generally uncomfortable, awkward and unprofessional.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Women aren't here to show you our faces. We're here to show you our skills.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">I worked my butt off to get where I am and I'll be damned if I let you reduce me to the 'office hottie' or 'just another pretty face.' At my job, we try to be as human as possible with our support, so a profile picture is required. I understand that hundreds of people are seeing my face every day. But out of 100, if 95 of those can refrain, why can't you?
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">I'm almost never the only person that touches a ticket. My whole team sees messages like that. It's embarrassing and puts me in a different light in front of them. Again, if you feel like you need to cross the line, try telling a friend 'this tech support chick is hot, and she's smart too.' Maybe if you get it out of your system, you won't direct it toward me. Just a theory.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Men always get to feel like tech support reps.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">In 7 years, not one male technician has ever reported to me that they had someone call them hot or sexy during a call or in a support ticket.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Why should I be any different?
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">I shouldn't.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">If you see this type of behavior in your tech community, understand that it is toxic. You can try to politely educate the person that there are better ways to communicate. But please, don't ignore it. Some people just don't know how it affects us because women don't talk about this sort of thing.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Ladies, we can stop brushing this off. We can stop letting behavior like this influence our decision to switch career fields. The tech industry has changed and maybe, just maybe, there are more men that support us than ones that don't. It is possible to flush out the trolls one by one, now.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">I love all my customers and I'm not mad at anyone. I don't know how often you get a human on the phone for support, but if you do and it's a woman, keep in mind that she still has a job to do, skills to share and confidence to build.

This year I ran the System76 booth with Aaron, Mitch and Louisa and wow, it was busy! The SCaLE organizers do such an excellent job making sure vendors have everything they need for a successful conference. The highlight of the show was of course, the people! This is one of the largest conferences I go to each year that never fails to bring all the best of the Linux community together.

System76 won 'Most Interactive Booth,' which we were all very proud of since there are ~150 vendors according to the SCaLE Website. We did raffles every hour, got hands on with Thelio, and had Rocket League running on the Oryx Pro with Steam Controllers for anyone to play. Aaron, in all his glory, wandered around the expo hall in the famous Tux costume and took pictures with people. Nathan Handler snapped this photo-shoot-worthy pic that I want to frame and put on a wall at System76.

Dinners are where all the stories come from, and we didn't waste any time creating new ones. After booth setup, we went over to Tokyo Wako for our traditional pre-conference din din. Nathan, Jose, Phil and Ken joined our group for Hibachi and Sake. Nathan and Jose thought it would be funny to secretly tell the server it was Louisa's birthday. I had no idea about it, so I was just as surprised as Louisa when the staff came walking up, singing with a robe, wig and RGB tambourine. Look how awesome the wig looked on Louisa. Almost looked natural! I had tears in my eyes laughing!
One of the highlights of the trip was the Jupiter Broadcasting meetup at P.F. Changs on Saturday night. Food was great (spicy!) and the group was welcoming and happy! Glad we got a photo before everyone left!
I really want to thank everyone who made it a point to say hi and come take a picture with me! That made me feel very special and I love you guys so much! See you all next year!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5432848212275856754.post-45362498904432328832019-02-26T12:42:00.000-08:002019-02-26T12:42:10.020-08:00Tackling Tech Support BulliesWe're all familiar with internet Trolls, right? Of course. Otherwise Reddit wouldn't exist. Well, there's this new type of Troll and it's called a Tech Support Bully, or TSB. Similar to a Troll, but not so much under the bridge type or on Reddit type. It's more like IN YOUR FACE type.

Sometimes I wonder how it's possible to forget that the person you just called for help is actually a person too. A human. You contacted a HUMAN for help?!? OMG. Yes, I want to help you, even if you're a TSB. The quicker you come out from under the bridge, the quicker we can get the problem solved. Tech Support Bullies spend more time being mean to me on the call than they do trying to solve the problem. How in the world does that help?

(Clarification: When I say US and WE, I mean me and my team. Or I could mean Linux support pros in general... Apply it where you want, but I'm just telling you how it is.)

How it Affects Us - Emotionally and Physically

TSBs are exhausting. We do everything in our power to get things fixed, but when there are software issues that are much deeper than we can diagnose right away, we have to spend hours researching, trying to recreate, and prep a valid response or a backup plan. When we know it's going to take a while, we update you letting you know it will take a while and be real with you. When you're used to doing 8-15 tickets per hour, then you get stuck on one for 3 hours, it's actually physically exhausting. Your neck, shoulders, chest tension, all of that weirdness that comes with sitting for long periods of time can dehabilitate you for a week if you let it. Sometimes, we have to take off our headsets and just breathe deep for a minute. Some of us walk it off. I personally have cried it off in a stairwell or two. I'm not ashamed to admit it- Anymore...

Be a Human

Support Pros: Don't be afraid to pull the human card and say 'I understand how you feel, I've been in a similar situation' Or let them know a customer you've dealt with has. Empathy can turn things around quickly, but the positive outcome is what they need to hear the loudest. What are you going to do to fix it? Let them think they are right in what they are feeling, because they are, but also educate them that the best way to get this resolved faster is by sticking to the path toward solution. Last, try to minimize the situation for the user. The loudest ones usually thing the problem is bigger than it is and the all of a sudden the sky is falling. For some people it is, but even if it is, that worry and speculation does nothing to help solve the case. Assure the user that it isn't a widespread issue and that you're confident in the fix you provide. If you aren't confident, don't send the fix. That always encourages more negativity if you're wrong or unsure.

Trolls: (you know who you are) is keep the insults to a minimum about the company or product, because although it's not directed at the person, it's still very intense for a human to deal with. TSBs can provide feedback at the end through the appropriate channels. Companies send out surveys for a reason. Not only will you get your support case handled faster, but you can actually make a difference by sending it through the appropriate channel. The person who looks at those surveys actually uses that information to make change.

If you're a TSB reading this and you bully a tech support rep, just know that they have to move onto the next ticket with it weighing on their shoulders for the rest of the day. That negativity is contagious and can ruin someone's day and affect their attitude on future support tickets.

Turning the support case around with empathy and positivity as quickly as possible is the best scenario for everyone. Letting the person continue to vent or insult you is not. Preventative measures are a whole different topic, but tackling current bullies is possible and we can all embrace it if we try. Empathize, minimize and Stay positive! You are one more step toward customer support happiness if you do!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5432848212275856754.post-54183432580269788602019-02-22T14:03:00.000-08:002019-02-25T17:01:05.388-08:00Upcoming EventsSCaLE 17X- Pasadena, California

I'm so excited to talk about
this little precious Galago Pro! I like to name my laptops, and
nothing is more fitting for this machine (in my use case) than the
name ‘Princess’ because my experience with the Galago so far has
been royally spectacular. After more than a month of frequent use,
I’ve found the Galago to be an excellent choice for the mobile
worker. I’m frequently on a train, plane or bus, so portability
is an absolute must-have for me. Although the portability is my
favorite feature, I’m fond of a few other things the Galago Pro has
to offer.

Look and Feel

She’s so pretty
and shiny with her smooth aluminum body. She sports a touch of class
with the metallic accents bordering the touchpad adding the perfect
amount of elegance to remind you what you’re working on just before
you start typing. I feel 'elite' just working on the Galago Pro,
knowing that whoever is on the other side of the display is envious
of my prized gem of a laptop.

Keyboard

Princess caters to
what I need in a keyboard. I can type 80 wpm which is my normal average, with few mistakes- if any. I love that there’s no numpad on the right because I’m
not trying to use this for massive spreadsheets or calculations, so
that space isn’t filled with unnecessary keys. Instead, it makes my
little Precious even more portable. Love the Home and End keys on the
side of the Enter key. Just a pinky distance away. Fabulous!

Size and Portability

The size is perfect.
This is my second trip with the Galago Pro. I couldn’t pick a
better travelling partner! She’s .56” thick with a 13” display
and 2.87 lbs. On the flight, the Galago positions perfectly on the
tray table. Since it’s so
thin and light, I didn’t have to bring anything but my laptop bag
for this trip. I had plenty of room for clothes, my curling iron,
makeup bag and hygeine bag. I’m pretty psyched to slim my trips
down to one laptop bag! I’m used to carrying my 17” laptop which
I thought was pretty portable for a 17”, but I don’t think I’ll
even be taking the bigger one out of the house anymore since the
Galago is much more portable. Another great feature- the power adapter is tiny! It’s .2
lbs and 3.5”x 1” x.75”. Slimming down to the more portable
Galago Pro for my trips leaves room for an entire other outfit!

User-Serviceable

Guess what? If you
have your own hard drive or RAM, or just can’t afford to max out
your Galago Pro when you purchase, you can add your components down
the road. I took Princess apart to show you how wonderfully easy and
quick the Galago Pro is to service. Check out below.

Battery Life

My workload while
travelling consists of writing with Libre Office, web browsing (lots
of Tweeting!) in Firefox with multiple tabs and responding to
System76 customers in Chrome. I also enjoy some video action on
Netflix and YouTube. I got a solid 4 hours of battery life
consistently off a full charge, with multiple suspend sessions in
between. My first flight was 3.5 hours. I was able to comfortably
work on the Airplane tray table the entire flight, minus the
mandatory tray tables up and airplane mode sessions. For me, the
battery life is perfect as frequent flyer. It’s rare that I even
work on the laptop for an entire flight, so the battery life is
actually more than enough for a trip, especially when you factor in
the usual in-flight beverage, snack and bathroom break. Being able to
suspend properly by just closing the lid is extremely convenient.
With as many times as I have to stop doing what I’m doing quickly,
I love to be able to just pick up right where I left off just as
quick as it was to close the lid. With that said, you’ll likely get
3.5-4 hours with the 36 Wh battery on the System76 Galago Pro.

feedback and see their reviews online. If you are one of those lucky
customers, feel free to share your review with me by email or in the

I’m sitting here
at the airport waiting for my connecting flight to Virginia to meet
the Linux Laptop Orchestra at Virginia Tech, kicking off a busy next
couple of months.

LinuxFest Northwest
is coming up in a few weeks. Last year I did the Linux Switch Competition with Noah and Chris from Linux Action Show. I wonder
what’s in store for this year’s event?!? Can we top last year’s
switch competition? If you haven't seen the competition, it's pretty entertaining :)

We probably can’t
top that since we don’t have any specific competition planned this
time around, but LFNW should be eventful
enough with our System76 Booth and Ryan doing his talk about 11 Years Making Machines Born to Run Linux.

I’ll be travelling to LFNW with my wonderful support technician partner, April and our Community
Manager, Ryan Sipes. We are certainly a
combo to be reckoned with. We are all loud and passionate, especially
in regards to Linux and even more so after a few drinks, when it
comes to our favorite geeky topics. And that’s just absolutely
fabulous. April and I will be manning the booth and Ryan will be
doing a talk and will likely swing by the booth to confess his
undying love for the new Galago Pro. That dude loves this laptop- A
LOT. Make sure you ask him about it at LFNW if you get a chance to
chat with him. Hope to see you there!

Before LFNW, I have
the Linux Laptop Orchestra performance in West Virigina. The only
fully loaded Linux Laptop Orchestra in the world powered by Ubuntu
and System76 will be putting on an epic display of magical sound at Virginia Tech College. I’ll be front and center, seeing our
Lemurs resonate beautiful sound through an auditorium of Windows and
Mac users. I could’ve said people, but they are likely Windows and
Mac users who will see System76 displayed across the stage, so that
sounds more awesome. You can do a lot of things with System76 laptops- but the group at Virginia Tech under Dr. Ivica Bukvic's leadership
decided to create a whole orchestra. Check out how awesome this project is!

Now off to the plane to see the Linux Laptop Orchestra at Virginia Tech!

the new System76 shirt, but if not, you'll see one here and find out how
to get one for yourself. We started calling it the 'Computer Love' shirt.

I designed the shirt to sum up who we are
as a company with simple icons so that any human could understand what
we're about or at least become curious. The logo on the front is my loud display of pride to support System76. The message on the back is simple. Ubuntu plus System76 equals
Love is a human emotion- a connection - a special bond.
Have you ever thought about how much you love your computer? Do you love
the company that made it? Do you have a human connection to the
company? I can't say that I've ever thought to myself, 'man, I
just love this Toshiba laptop' or 'I can't live without this HP
notebook.' For as long as I've been using computers, I've never had a
human interaction with anyone at the company that manufactures it. System76 is as human as a company can get.

At
System76, you'll remember the name of who you talk to. We also invite
you to come to our corporate headquarters for Ubuntu release parties or
to look at our computers if you're local. We add a human touch to our
computers everywhere possible, from the initial design to the
performance and the service you receive. System76 is so different than any other computer company. If you can't
master the human connection, how can you expect a customer to love your
product? I want every customer to have an emotional attachment (LOVE!) to their
computer. It's such an important device. You should love your computer.

The
majority of System76 customers LOVE their computers. When we receive
feedback, it isn't 'I really like this machine.' It's more like 'I LOVE
my new laptop! I'm going to tell everyone to go to System76.' The more I
heard that, the more I started to understand that we should spread the
love anywhere and everywhere. If you know me well, you'll know that I
believe the best way to do that is with a T-shirt (You'll understand my reasoning in a future post :)). That's how the Computer Love T-shirt was born.

My goal with this shirt is to
encourage people to search online about System76 and discover what
they're missing on their computer. Also, I wear it to encourage
conversation. Since I ride public transit and work in the heart of
Downtown Denver, the back of the shirt has served as a topic of
conversation on multiple occasions. When a stranger asks me what the
logos mean, I get as excited as a kitten with a cardboard box. Why?
Because I love System76.

In my 6th year at System76, I
surprise myself every day with the fact that I love my job even more.
Switching people to Ubuntu/Linux is so fulfilling. But it's not all I
do. I have the opportunity to do more than one job at System76 with
every task revolving around customers. Doing sales, customer service and
tech support allows me to develop a human connection with my customers
that extends throughout the lifetime of their product. It even spreads
to my social networks to the point where I consider all my customers
friends. That's the type of experience we aim for at System76. That
human connection means everything to me- to all of us here at System76.
When that human connection stems from love, it is bound to last and
create happiness on all sides. And, if you know me, you'd know that
nothing makes me more happy than spreading love and happiness. I want my
efforts to extend outside the office even more, and if a T-shirt can
assist with that, I'm going to everything I can to encourage people to
wear it.

Strength in Numbers

Hopefully this shirt
eventually spreads the love to enough people who support us, that you
won't be able to go a day without seeing System76 in the wild. So, I
wear this shirt every day with pride and with a smile. Why? Because I
love System76. I can't say it enough.

The Colorado Loco Ubuntu Team Release Party for Ubuntu 16.10 was larger than any release we've had in history! I had 50+ on the signup sheet and 60+ at the peak. I met dozens of new people and at least a dozen new-to-Ubuntu users! The Ubuntu Beginners pamphlet was a hit, proving there were people who wanted to know more and willing to take it home and give Ubuntu a try. A lot of people look at how many people attended, but the most important stat to me is how many people took the new user materials and found it useful. That's how you know it was successful.

Instead of a meetup at a local restaurant or bar, I decided to leverage our excellent corporate sponsorship by my fabulous employer, System76 and host an event. We set up stations to keep visitors engaged, had fancy catering to fill the tummies, activities for the kids, and kegs of beer to stir the conversation :)

All Things Open in Raleigh was a blast. Our booth was busy as can be, and the conference had 1,000 more attendees than last year, according to event organizers. It's starting to have that OSCON type feel for a conference. It was unbelievable how many more booths, sessions and people there were this year compared to last. For an open source conference, it's definitely one of the best ones we attend outside of Linux Fests. I met tons of customers and fans, and hopefully influenced a few hundred people to consider our products next time they need a computer!

The networking at All Things Open is one of the best features of the conference. The social events are comfortable, fun and full of smiling faces. There is nothing better than a sea of geeks in a barcade after a long day manning the booth at a conference.
So crazy how life goes by so fast in the tech world...

I have some exciting and important announcements to make. Ubuntu 16.10 is coming out this week and that calls for a release party for the Colorado Ubuntu Group. Guess who sponsors the local Ubuntu group... SYSTEM76. So, you know we're going to have an awesome set-up. Mostly because I'M planning it :) J/K (sort of). There were so MANY people at the April release and I anticipate at least 20 more for this one. Our parties aren't like other Loco Ubuntu parties... I try to make them as exciting, entertaining and as geeky as possible. But, I also love food, drinks and free stuff. So, someone like me organizing a party can- and has always- resulted in a GOOD TIME. If you're in Colorado, you're invited!

We have a ridiculous amount of product updates. Most deal with nVidia 10-series GPUs, but the most highly-anticipated release for my personal customers is the RAM upgrade. You get up to 32 GB RAM @ 2400 Mhz on our mainstream System76 Laptops. Are you serious? Yes. We are serious at System76. I dare you to find something comparable to our laptops with Linux working out of the box at the same price. It's just too hard. So, I'll be happy to make it easy for you because I can tell you what you need if you just talk to me. Phone, chat or e-mail, just get in touch with me. It sounds cheesy, but I don't work on commission, so I'm definitely here to provide the RIGHT solution for you or your family. If you can't convince them to switch to Linux-Ubuntu... I will.

I'm on a switching frenzy when it comes to Ubuntu, so, I'm sorry if I rant. I can't stop switching people from Windows to Ubuntu and it's kind of a big deal. To me.

Actually, I'm probably not sorry for ranting...

Because it might just work...

I wanted to describe all the things coming up for what I'm doing in the community lately, so here's the info :)

I have the All Things Open Conference in Raleigh at the end of the month. It's going to be such an amazing time with the amazing presentations and our epic booth setup for System76. I only get to run the booth, but we have our lead RockStar, Jason DeRose, heading up a talk on how we image our Ubuntu systems. It's fast, it's innovative, it's geeky and it's admirable. I would love to hear what other adjectives we can come up with about it. Please let me know in the thoughts below after you hear Mr. DeRose speak :)

We always have tons of pics and experiences from conferences, but this time, with Ryan as our lead, we'll have more than just pics. It's exciting. It's going to be a completely different social experience and work enviornment with someone new, but the only thing it can be is EXCITING. So, I can't imagine anything that can go wrong. Feel free to ping me @socialhappiness on Twitter bc I'll chat with you any hour that I'm awake- no matter the subject.

Love you all and can't wait to chat with you. Please find me on Twitter @socialhappiness because that's my fav place to converse besides in person. XOXOXOXO
I know I've been dormant for over a year on my blog, but that's about to change :) I'm still working at System76 and still loving it, of course. One of my favorite parts about my job is travelling to open source tradeshows. This past weekend was Southeast LinuxFest in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was absolutely fantastic!

This was System76's first time sponsoring SELF, and it was everything we hoped for. The conference was well-organized, accommodating and full of quality attendees that were generally interested in our products. It also helped that we gave away a 14" Lemur Laptop. The laptop giveaway caused a brief Twitter Storm, showing off the many faces of me, along with the many anxious laptop seekers.

Do you ever make 'Booth Buddies' when you go to conferences? Or do you prefer working across and next to the same people for a whole weekend without saying a word? I'm not a fan of awkward, so I make sure to establish booth buddies as soon as possible. At #SELF2016, we were closest to Linode and Ubuntu. Booth buddies are not only great for jokes between heavy traffic periods, but for hanging out prior to the tradeshow sponsored social events. We decided to head to Fuji for some Hibachi and Sake Bombs. If you want to laugh, here's a brief recap of the Booth Buddy Dinner in a slideshow :)

Overall, #SELF2016 was a tradeshow to remember and definitely requires my attendance next year. I definitely want to sponsor, host or organize one of the nightly parties next year.

When it's all said and done, a heavy meal and a ridiculous alcoholic beverage are usually in order. We picked Midwood Smokehouse for our pre-airport rendezvous conference-closer. Bacon-infused vodka Bloody Mary (AKA Hangry Mary) is pretty much all I need to say... or remember :)
Do you like to spruce up your documents with different fonts? Do you print a monthly newsletter for the office? You’re in luck! The Ubuntu Software Center is home to hundreds of fonts available for installation in just a few clicks. When a font package is installed through Ubuntu Software Center, any application that uses fonts will contain the new fonts the next time you open the app. Start by opening the Ubuntu Software Center. There’s a section called ‘Fonts’ on the left side of the window. After clicking ‘Fonts,’ the window will display a long list of options for installation. The best package if you’re looking for hundreds of decorative, creative fonts is the ‘465 free TrueType fonts by Brian Kent.’

If you click ‘Install,’ you’ll be prompted to enter your password and the installation will finish within a few seconds. If you have LibreOffice or Gimp etc. open, you’ll need to close the application and re-open it for the newly installed fonts to show up in the font list.

Although there are hundreds of available fonts in the Ubuntu Software Center, if you’re looking for something specific, you can find open source fonts on Open Font Library. First, visit the Open Font Library and choose a font. There’s a large download button next to the font example. Click to download once you’ve chosen your desired font. Pay attention to where you save the file because you’ll need to access it next.

After downloading the file, you’ll need to open and unzip it. When you open the file, there will be an option in the file window menu called ‘Extract’ which you can go ahead and click. A new window will pop up asking you which folder you want to store your extracted files in. Some people find it helpful to create a new folder called ‘Fonts’ for easy access later. After you’ve determined where to extract the files, click the option to ‘Show the Files.’ Now, the .ttf files will be available for a quick install. Click on the .ttf file of your desired font. A new window will open up with an alphabet of the font. In the top of the window, you’ll see a button to ‘install font.’ You may need to install more than one .ttf file because the bold and italic options are separate from the normal font option.

Once your fonts are installed, you can close all the file windows you had open. Next time you open an application that has font options, the font you just installed will be available for use. To confirm the font installed, simply open Libre Office and find your font in the drop down. It’s in alphabetical order, so you can find it quickly.

The purpose of this week's Ubuntu Hour was to finalize a welcome handout with ways to get started with Ubuntu and reasons to use the best operating system in the world. The goal is to provide the handout with Ubuntu CD's, a sticker sheet and Ubuntu key stickers to cover up those Windows keys. The document was completed with final edits Wednesday and the CoLoCo CD kits were prepared to send to local volunteers yesterday.

On top of the incredible response from the team to complete the handout, I received a handful of volunteers for CD distribution throughout Colorado. The volunteers below will be available with install CD's in the following Colorado cities:

Neal McBurnett: Boulder

Chris Yoder: Longmont

Ryan Nicholson: Fort Collins

Emma Marshall: Denver & Aurora

Volunteer emails will be included in the Monday announcement to the Colorado Team mailing list. I'm very happy with all the support and teamwork going on within the Colorado Ubuntu Team and can't wait for our upcoming events. In addition to more Ubuntu Hours, we're planning an epic InstallFest this Summer.
Here's a close look at our 2-sided handout:
I’m so happy to experience another amazing quarter at System76! I’m finding a reason to celebrate every single day, and Ubuntu is the common factor in all this happiness. In March, I was nominated as the Colorado Ubuntu Users Team lead and became an official Ubuntu member, which are two things I’ve been working at for the last few years.

I’ve been planning and attending events and release parties for a few years, but now I’m ready to lead the Colorado Ubuntu Team on an exciting mission to spread Ubuntu. I’m hopeful that the team is going to be completely supportive and on board with the plan since it requires little effort but loads of fun. My first initiative was to regain our title as an official Ubuntu LoCo Team. I had tons of questions but was very thankful to have the support of Jose Antonio Reye and Stephen Michael Kellat because they encouraged me to drop what I was doing and focus on the LoCo team as my main priority. David Overcash and Cheri Francis offered awesome advice to get things going. They are seasoned Ubuntu Loco team leaders and know the ins and outs of a successful LoCo team. Everyone was so patient and supportive, constantly answering questions that I probably asked more than once. I went from learning launchpad, then Ubuntu wiki, mailing list administration, to Roadmap and collaboration- then ending at submitting our Colorado Ubuntu Loco Team Verification Application within a few days. I submitted our application and the vote was swift and unanimous. The Colorado Ubuntu Users Group is an Official Ubuntu LoCo Team!

We had our team roadmap meeting in April and I was happy with the turnout of 21 participants and a handful of volunteers. We have a great year ahead of us and I can’t wait to get even closer to the team so we can spread Ubuntu with excitement and enthusiasm. I hosted a meetup event on April 1 at the local bowling alley/pub for the “Geeks Who Drink” trivia night. We didn’t win, but we didn’t lose :) It was a fun night full of laughs.

It should be our largest event ever! I created a 12 days of Trusty Tahr feature campaign for the System76 social networks. That was Carl’s idea and I’m happy that he let me embrace the project and run with it. It’s been fun getting to know the new Ubuntu version. It’s by far the greatest release yet. I look forward to this quarter and this year and will definitely keep you updated as I celebrate Ubuntu and dive deeper into the community.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5432848212275856754.post-79311726137310170762013-10-25T11:36:00.000-07:002013-10-25T11:36:01.014-07:00A Weekend in Denver with Project: Community Computers

I
spent last weekend working with Project: Community Computers finalizing our
upcoming project. It's great to see the passion these guys have in
our face to face meetings. I had the pleasure of meeting another member of the group during his recent trip to Denver. Kiefer hung out at System76 all day Friday and shared videos of communities they've donated computers to. We had a nice trip to the Denver Zoo on Saturday and a passion-packed work session afterward.

P:CC sets up computer labs around the
world, creating communities of Ubuntu users with recycled hardware
and laptop donations. With a strong focus on providing laptops to
nonprofit organizations in Milwaukee and the various Ubuntu labs
deployed in other countries, Project: Community Computers has
successfully launched more than 17 Ubuntu computer labs worldwide and various individual donations.
Every lab or donation from P:CC has in some way, helped an individual
or community embrace the benefits of technology. After watching the
video interviews of people they've given computers to, it's clear
that they are truly making a change. I am blown away by the impact
they are having on a local and global scale.

It
just doesn't get any more Ubuntu than this.

Most
labs set up by Project: Community Computers contain 15-20 computers
that were donated by a corporation or school district. Every system
is installed with the Ubuntu operating system and the Edubuntu
educational application bundle. They partner with local non-profits in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to deploy computer labs locally and abroad. Their next lab deployment will be in Sierra Leone in late November. In 2014, they plan to shift focus locally with a goal of donating Ubuntu laptops to every nonprofit organization in Milwaukee. They believe the nonprofit groups can help more people faster if they had the technology to work faster and more efficiently. I believe it too :)

The Indiegogo campaign to fund their 2014 goal is kicking off November 1st. I've personally put a lot of work into the campaign and can't wait to get started! I truly believe in what Project: CC is doing and I'm excited to see the results of the campaign so they can achieve their goal in 2014.

Ohio
Linux Fest was a blast this year. The Expo Hall was busy and packed
with geeky awesomeness. I met a bunch of fabulous people and had some
excellent conversations with customers and other Ubuntu fans. I've
made my way through a number of conferences this past year and
OLF2013 had more System76 customers than any other conference. It was
fun to meet customers face to face after having ongoing conversations
with them through the order queue as well as connecting through
social networks. It was the first conference I've been to where I
wasn't completely surrounded by MAC laptops, which was an awesome
sight for me.

I
wasn't able to attend any talks or classes because Ian and I were
running the booth in the Expo Hall. I'm fine with that though,
because most of it seemed overly technical for my liking and I love
running the System76 booth and talking about our computers.

Our

could believe that it was running on Intel Graphics. We had quite the
crowd the majority of the time.

I
was impressed by the convention center in Ohio and loved all the
amenities and the fact that it was physically connected to our Hotel.
The Ohio Convention Center is HUGE. The convenient store on location
had everything I could've imagined. If you forget something, it's OK
because you'll be able to find it at the convenient store. I hate
being in a random city without contact solution and hair mousse...
glad the trip worked out in my favor :)

The
highlight of Ohio Linux Fest was meeting our partners from Project:
Community Computers. Jeff and Garrick shared their passion for
spreading technology to communities in need and it was really
heartwarming and exciting to know that we have an opportunity to help
them out. I'm personally excited to continue promoting their work and
can't wait to see how their next Ubuntu lab deployment goes. They are
headed to Sierra Leone in November to set up a lab at a University
with 40 computers running Ubuntu.

Yesterday was my first time participating in the conference as a speaker! It was wonderful to meet Stephen Michael Kellat from Ubuntu Ohio. It's always good to put a face to a name, especially when they contribute so much to the +Ubuntu community. He organized the event, which was well-planned and stress free for other participants. Thanks Stephen!
I also had the pleasure of meeting our partners from +Project: Community Computers. They had a presentation about Ubuntu powering Ecycling. Here's a pic of Jeff and Garrick sharing their awesome project at Ubucon.
My presentation was titled "Everyone Deserves Technology." I shared Diane's story about how she transitioned an entire school to Ubuntu over a period of just a few years. Her success and passion to spread Ubuntu inspires me and I'm trying to get the word out about how it's possible to deploy Ubuntu on a massive scale as an individual or with help from your +Ubuntu LoCo Teams. I met Diane Leikvold a few months ago at our Raring Release Party and she shared her passion for Ubuntu with the group at the party and followed up with an email to the Colorado LoCo Team. Her efforts to transform an entire school network to Ubuntu and offer training to the teachers and students is an inspiration and a great story that I couldn't help but share. The following interview was featured in the latest issue of Full Circle Magazine, but here are a few excerpts for a little background on her success bringing Ubuntu into Longmont Christian School in Colorado.

I started teaching application software in the high school at Longmont Christian School in 2000 with 12 computers throughout the school (9 being in my lab) with a dial-up connection. The next year, we networked the school and doubled the amount of computers. By 2009 we were up to 63 computers running Windows 2000. In 2010, I wrote a proposal and presented our desire to change to Ubuntu to the principle of the school. After gaining his approval, I imaged all of the computers in the school with Ubuntu 10.04, wrote training material for the teachers, sent an e-mail out to notify the teachers of the upcoming changes and training dates. The week before school started, I trained all of the teachers and staff on Ubuntu and boldly started the year on the new platform.
I was truly amazed at how smoothly it went for such a large change. The teachers embraced the new operating system and continue to enjoy using it today. Through the years, I brought down what I was teaching in the high school down to middle school and then elementary. I truly believe that what we have at Longmont Christian School is pretty awesome!
I have 26 teachers, most were technology challenged and fearful, but they all love using Ubuntu and are doing so well. I have over 120 laptops/desktops dispersed throughout the school all installed with Ubuntu. I would love to get the word out to Canonical and Boulder County to spread the word even farther on how Ubuntu is a great solution.

What influenced you to take on such a large project? What's the most rewarding aspect of the Longmont Christian School project?

The school was using Windows 2000 and the support was up in the summer of 2010. We needed to upgrade our operating system, but the school was very budget constrained, so, with my husband’s encouragement, we looked into Ubuntu. The rest is history.

The most rewarding aspect for me is how smooth the transition happened at our school and how easily the teachers adopted the new operating system. I am even able to support teacher curriculum through Wine in Ubuntu.

Diane is also working on a Ubuntu video training series specific to the needs of the staff at Longmont Christian School. Her efforts to transition an entire Colorado school to Ubuntu have not only influenced a large number of people to discover Ubuntu, but has enabled the school to function without a large IT budget. She truly is an inspiration and a great motivator if anyone is looking to take on a similar project.
In other news, the International +Ubuntu LoCo Teams have been keeping me occupied with requests for free Ubuntu stickers to distribute in their country. I sent out more than 2,500 "Powered by Ubuntu" stickers and marketing materials this month. Isn't that epic? I think so! Check out our International Sticker providers list now... It's growing!

Filling the individual sticker requests in the United States is keeping my eyes on Ubuntu constantly. I'm sending out free stickers all over the country at a steady pace of 80-100 requests per month. It's pretty awesome to watch Ubuntu spreading from my perspective. The hand-written notes and pictures keep me excited and happy to devote time to the project.

I'm receiving loads of happy customers sharing their experiences about purchasing a System76 PC and it's just magical to feel like I'm at the center of it all. Check out all this happiness!
With the release of our Bonobo Extreme, the holiday specials and the holidays, I've never watched time fly as much as last month!
If you didn't hear, our Bonobo Extreme was quite the surprise for System76 customers. A beefed-up 17" gaming laptop with a dedicated graphics card, HD screen and multi-color backlit keys, would make any geek drool. Extreme is only one word that describes this beast of a laptop. It's pretty serious.

I'm currently working on follow up interviews for the Ubuntu Women Blog, covering the ladies featured in previous issues of Full Circle Magazine. I'm chugging away at the Colorado Loco Ubuntu Group Social Networks, slowly gaining more followers every day. I created lists of Ubuntu LoCo Groups and shared them on our networks, hoping to connect with other LoCo Groups. I'm also sharing Ubuntu news as often as possible. I'm going to keep working at it until I figure out a good strategy to grow the group socially. I'd love to hear from other LoCo groups on their social media wins and losses, and gain some feedback on how to increase engagement. I'll put that on my agenda for next week and start researching the lists I created.

I can't forget to mention all the happy customers I'm talking to every day at System76. They just don't stop. I can't believe how incredible our customers are, and I'm just loving every phone call and email I get. I received this email from Ian in California after he ordered his new Bonobo Extreme and a Leopard Extreme. He's been our customer since 2008 and his letter totally made my week!
We promote Ubuntu by helping people brag about their OS with free "powered by Ubuntu" and Ubuntu Key Stickers. Anyone in the U.S. can send us their self-addressed, stamped envelope, and I'll personally send you 4 of each sticker so you can share with your friends. I filled 17 of these requests yesterday! My favorite part is opening the letter to a cute picture or happy note. I received the ones below yesterday.
We have a huge wall in our office with all the notes we've received over the years. I have 2 more poster boards to fill before I run out of space! It would be sweet to cover the rest of the wall before the new year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I look forward to seeing your requests :)
Are you outside the U.S. but want to receive some free stickers? That's OK! We provide the free sticker materials to more than a dozen LoCo volunteers across the country. I’m fully recovered from my first Ubuntu Developer Summit in Copenhagen! It was an experience I’ll never forget and definitely made an impact on my passion for Ubuntu and open source software. It was wonderful to finally meet some of the faces I see online and the names I respond to in emails.

I was able to meet a handful of System76 customers and Ubuntu LoCo group leaders who participate in our free sticker program. Jose Antonio from Ubuntu Peru and Sergio from Columbia were very friendly! I had the opportunity to sit in on the Leadership Council session and discuss some initiatives that improve LoCo team presence, as well as specific advice for the Ubuntu Colorado team.

My favorite part of the summit was meeting Lyz Krumbach from the Ubuntu Women group. She was the first person to welcome me into the Ubuntu community and helped point me in the right direction to get involved. Lyz recently went to Ghana to deploy 100 desktop computers to schools in need. She is an excellent leader and a great asset to the Ubuntu community!
Meeting Flavia Weisghizzi from Italy was an exciting experience as well. She contributes to Ubuntu through public speaking and various methods of inner and outer communication projects like marketing and translation. She instantly offered specific advice on public speaking and walked me through her timeline and some of her best moments. The Ubuntu Women dinner on the 3rd day of UDS was filled with laughs and meaningful discussions. The food was pretty tasty but the company was the best part. It was hysterical when TMT and Mohi informed us that they’d never used or seen a pizza cutter before. The restaurant was quite dark, but I tried to snap a photo of them both as they tried to use the utensil.
Ian and I passed out some free System76 Quantal Quetzal T-shirts and Ubuntu stickers. Carl Richell, CEO of System76, designed the intricate quetzal on the back of the shirt. It’s definitely one of my favorite T-shirts I own :) In fact, I’m sporting one right now!

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu, took a minute to check out our Sable Complete. I was walking toward the booth to finish setting up for the day and I had the new All-in-one in my arms. He examined every inch of the system and stopped at the 76 logo. He asked me what the 76 stands for and I told him- The 76 stands for the American Revolution of 1776. It stands for freedom.
After my first Ubuntu Developer Summit representing System76, I’ve realized that I’m truly part of something. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
